The history of photographic portraiture is as long as the history of the camera. McMorris’ portraits are of the people who took photographs of her while she was growing up.
The need to photograph those closest to us can actually fulfill a need to distance oneself. Perhaps in the work of McMorris, it is a way of gaining objectivity.
McMorris uses a medium format camera to capture her subject and text to further engage the viewer. In Nomad 2D, the portraits were blown-up to cover two-thirds of the billboard with text about her subjects, complemented the remaining third.
Ekua McMorris completed her BFA at the London Metropolitan University and is currently undertaking her M.A at The Royal College of Art in the department of photo media studies.
